ABANTU for Development

Established in 1991, ABANTU for Development is a registered NGO that focuses on issues of gender and development in Ghana and Africa. Specifically, ABANTU advocates for women’s rights, by increasing the capacity of African women through participation in social, economic and political decision-making processes. As such, their work includes advocacy campaigns, training, research, institutional development and networking with partner organizations. They believe that gender inequality in Africa perpetuates poverty and inhibits future development.

Community Training Projects (CTP)
Goma District, near Kasoa, Central Region
Located in Buduburam, the former Liberian Refugee Camp, Community Training Projects (CTP), a local Community-Based Organization, works to empower Liberian Refugees in Ghana. CTP was founded in 2007, in response to the growing needs of the refugee community in Buduburam; at the time it sought to empower refugees of all-ages by promoting and advocating for education and training programs on the camp. Since it’s inception in 2007, CTP has facilitated education and training programs in various disciplines, including agriculture and business, for a vast number of Liberian refugees. Currently, they seek to provide opportunities for women and children with regards to education, health and livelihoods projects - these projects are primarily supported and run by international volunteers.
Care International Ghana – Tamale Office
Tamale, Northern Region
Care International is an internationally recognized NGO, with projects in various countries throughout the world; Care began working in Ghana in 1994. The organizations main mandate seeks to alleviate poverty amoungst rural communities in Ghana. Care undertakes various integrated development projects that address issues of education, health, governance and sustainable livelihoods, amoungst others. Within all of the organizations projects they look to collaborate with local organizations and civil society groups, understanding the importance of these partnerships in the implementation of their varied development projects. Care also works with governmental bodies and private sector partners. Within all of their projects Care emphasizes the importance of participation and capacity building.

Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP)
Kumasi, Asante Region
Established in 1983, CEDEP has been spearheading development project within Ghana for over 30 years. At its core the organization is a service-oriented NGO that supports various development interventions in a multi-faceted fashion, from facilitating education programs, advisory and consultancy services, research, training, advocacy to networking initiatives. CEDEP uses a cross-sectoral approach to poverty reduction, human resource development, gender equity and sustainable development. To do so, the organization partners with multi-laterals, bi-laterals, transnational, local and international NGOs as well as governmental bodies and the private sector. Their main office is based in Kumasi, but their projects have a wide-range, with beneficiaries throughout all the regions in Ghana.

Empower Playgrounds Inc. (EPI)

Located in various communities throughout Ghana, Empower Playgrounds Inc., seeks to provide electricity to isolated communities in need. Specifically, EPI provides power-generating Merry-Go-Round systems to selected public schools and communities without mainstream electricity grid connections. EPI hopes that by providing small amounts of electricity, produced by the power of playing, the quality of education and the resulting literacy levels in these communities will improve. .

Ghana Permaculture Institute (GPI)
Techiman, Brong-Ahafo Region
Ghana Permaculture Institute (GPI) is a multi-faceted agricultural organization with both not-for-profit projects and a variety of social business initiatives, situated in and around Techiman, with additional projects in the Upper East and Upper West Regions. GPI focuses on ecological agriculture projects with the overall mandate to provide farmer training, sustainable agriculture education and community-development. Some of the organizations projects include: micro-finance loans, permaculture training and research, cosmetics preparation and production, as well as mushroom farming and cultivation..

Ghana Refugee Board
Accra, Greater Accra Region
The Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) is a governmental institution that was established as part of the Ghana Refugee Law in 1992; it is works under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior. The GRB facilitates and manages all issues pertaining to refugees, asylum seekers and refugee camps/settlements in Ghana. Though the Buduburam Refugee Camp was disbanded in 2008, the GRB still plays an important role in this community, as well as refugee communities in other regions of the country. The GRB’s overall mandate is to promote the socio-economic rights of these communities and individual refugees. They work in collaboration with the United Nation’s High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Hanover Green Consulting

Hanover Green Consulting is a for-profit, social enterprise focused on providing transparent and accountable consultation, training and expertise with regards to the monitoring and evaluation of development projects in Ghana. Hanover Green was established in 2010, by a group of young African Entrepreneurs and development students, looking to provide knowledge driven solutions in the corporate world. Though many of their projects seek to measure the challenges and successes of corporate social responsibility driven development project in Ghana; they also work with local and international NGO’s and government institutions, providing consultation and training with regards to monitoring and evaluation processes. Some of their clients have included, USAID, DFID, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, governmental ministries and agencies, Coca Cola and most recently Guinness Ghana.

The Mmofra Foundation

A registered non-profit organization, The Mmofra Foundation, established in 1997, seeks to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of children in Ghana. Mmofra was conceived in the early 1990’s by Efua Sutherland, a famous writer, poet, dramatist and child advocate, following her passing in 1996 her three children continued her legacy by establishing The Mmofra Foundation. The mandate of the organization is to educate children through the arts and creative play. Mmofra’s “office” is very unique, and is primarily a multi-faceted educational park in the Dzorwulu area in Accra.
NewEngery
Tamale, Northern Region
Established in 1994 in Tamale, NewEnergy, is a registered NGO that seeks to address the institutional inadequacies of Ghana’s social service sector, infrastructure and development by focusing on improving the access and quality of water and sanitation, energy and the environment as well as sustainable livelihoods, to rural communities in Ghana’s Northern Region. Currently, some of the organizations project areas include, but are not limited to: harnessing solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and solar drip-irrigation systems. .
Talensi Area Women’s Development Project (TAWODEP)
Talensi District, near Bolgatanga, Upper East Region
TAWODEP is a community-based organization that looks to address issues of gender in rural communities. TAWODEP is located in the Talensi District, about 30 minutes from Bolgatanga town, in the small communities of Bulugu, Shia, Yinduri, Pwalugu and Winkogo. The organization was founded in 2003, and continues to support projects like micro-finance loans, literacy programmes, and, vocational and business training for women.
Teach on the Beach (TOB)
Busua, Western Region
Teach on the Beach was established in 2003 in response to the community needs of increased access and quality of education and learning for youth in the village of Busua. The organizations mandate outlines the importance of youth empowerment through education, as a means for greater community-development. Teach on the Beach has established a variety of youth based programmes, which seek to provide youth in the community with opportunities and skills to become critical thinkers and leaders in their communities. The organization has a student sponsorship program that provides students with the opportunity to attend school, as well as participate in daily after-school programming.

West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA)
Accra, Greater Accra Region/Agona, near Takoradi, Western Region
The West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA) is an initiative that was established by several European Zoos, the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP) and its French Partner organization Conservation des Espèces et des Populations Animales (CEPA) in 2001. The organizations primary goal is to effectively preserve endemic primate species in the West-African Upper Guinean Rainforest, which are seriously threatened by extinction. WAPCA implements ecological conservation activities primarily in Accra and the Western Region of Ghana, as well as boarding communities in Ivory Coast. .

Widows and Orphans Movement
Bolgatanga, Upper East Region
Established in 1993, the Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), a small grassroots NGO, continues to work with vulnerable communities, specifically women and children, in Bolgatanga and around the Upper East Region. The organizations mandate focuses on gender empowerment through education, sustainable livelihoods initiatives and health-related programming; they seek to economically, socially, and culturally empower widows and their children. Over the past 20 years, Madame Betty Ayagiba, the founder and director of WOM, has been a dedicated advocate for policy reform, human rights education and HIV/AIDS prevention, in addition to providing vocational training, income generation, micro-credit loaning and agriculture projects to WOM’s beneficiaries. WOM also provide support, legal advice and representation for widows and their families.
