When I first came to Trent I took a range of introductory courses. I quickly realized that I was captivated by the IDS program and declared it as my major. At the time I had no idea that this decision would impact me in so many ways.
The courses offered by the IDS department expanded my worldview to a great extent. I attribute the quality of the education I received not only to the amazing content of these courses, but also to the small class sizes. This enabled professors to become familiar with students and to engage them in extensive dialogue and question asking.
Many of the IDS professors were both brilliant and passionate. I watched them light that spark in many students, including myself. They helped us develop tools to critically analyze the complex social, political, and economic structures and challenges of society. I also cultivated values that continue to motivate me in the search for equitable and sustainable solutions to global and local issues.
A number of the students I knew came to Trent specifically to experience the Trent in Ecuador program. When I decided to apply for the TIE cultural exchange I didn’t take the opportunity lightly, because I knew it would be challenging and that it would change my life. I was right, and it was absolutely worth the effort.
Nothing will open your mind and your heart like being fully immersed in another culture. This is a type of education that you won’t find in typical university settings. To be honest, it was one of the most difficult, beautiful, and rewarding things I’ve ever done. The TIE program will offer you networks and opportunities to become genuinely involved in the communities around you. If you make the most of that, you will move way beyond the role of a tourist and you will grow immensely. The things I learned from the people I met there are precious gifts that I am so grateful for.
Overall, I have left Trent’s IDS program feeling satisfied and confident in my abilities. The combination of my educational, travel, and volunteer experiences makes me very well prepared to apply to graduate schools this year!
