The School of Business and the Department of Global Development Studies Specialization in Global Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Social Change

The Trent School of Business and the Dept. of Global Justice and Development are pleased to announce an exciting new summer field course in Mexico.

Overview

The Specialization in Global Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Social Change is designed for students in Business Administration or Global Development Studies with an interest in global social change. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to better navigate the global economy and to appreciate the promise and limitations of social entrepreneurship and innovation in the Global South. It also offers experiential learning opportunities in the Global South where an intensive summer field course is followed by a placement with an organization or firm.

Graduating students who have fulfilled the requirements for a single- or joint-major Honours degree in Global Development Studies, a joint-major Honours degree in Business Administration, or a Bachelor of Business Administration may graduate with a Specialization in Global Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Social Change if they have successfully completed the following 4.0 credits with a minimum grade of 65% in each:

  • GDST-ADMN credit consisting of GDST-ADMN 1030H and 2030H
  • 3.0 credits from ADMN 3420H, ADMN 3441H, ECON-ADMN 3110H, ECON-ADMN 3120H, ECON-ADMN-GDST 3310H, ECON-ADMN-GDST 3330H, GDST-ADMN 3030D, GDST-POST 3220H, or POST-ADMN-ECON 3123H (students in the Bachelor of Business Administration program or a joint-major program in Business Administration and a subject other than Global Development Studies may include any of GDST 1001H, 1002H, or 4100H).

Key Courses

GDST-ADMN 1030H: Globalization, Transnational Corporations, and International Development

An overview of the global business environment and the contemporary corporate production networks that shape the process of international development. Using extensive case studies, issues covered include the globalization of the business environment, the organization of transnational corporations, their production networks, and their social and environmental effects.

GDST-ADMN 2030H: Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Global South

The course assesses the benefits and shortcomings of social entrepreneurship and innovation in the Global South. To do so, it combines analysis of conceptual and thematic issues with detailed, critical examination of case studies related to microfinance and e-banking, climate change and green energy, health care and education, agro-ecology, and social protection.

Prerequisite: 4.0 university credits or permission of instructor.

GDST-ADMN 3030H: Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Field Course

This 10-day summer field course in the Global South comprises in-class instruction and a site visit to projects involving social innovation at the grass-roots level. It provides first-hand knowledge of the challenges, promise, and limitations of social innovation and entrepreneurship in the institutional context of the Global South. Prerequisite: GDST-ADMN 2030H or permission of instructor.
