Student Property & Liability Insurance Program

Protecting What Matters While You Live in Residence

All students living in residence are automatically enrolled in the Student Property & Liability Insurance Program, which provides affordable coverage for personal belongings, liability protection, and temporary housing costs if your room becomes uninhabitable due to an insured loss.

Students who already have comparable insurance coverage through a personal policy, or a parent/guardian's homeowner's insurance may choose to opt out of the program by submitting proof of alternate coverage before the applicable deadline.

Read more about the program

Coverage Highlights

The program includes:

  • $10,000 Contents Coverage for personal belongings (replacement cost basis, subject to a $500 deductible)
  • $1,000,000 Personal Liability Coverage for accidental property damage or bodily injury for which you are legally responsible
  • $2,500 Additional Living Expenses if you need temporary accommodation following an insured loss in residence

Program Cost

Trent University offers a residence insurance program for an annual cost of $152 CAD. This annual program covers your personal belongings and provides liability protection while you live in residence.

The annual cost includes:

  • $91.80 CAD (including tax) paid to Marsh for the insurance program
  • $60.20 CAD administrative fee charged by Trent University to support program administration and related services

The insurance fee is included in residence fees unless you successfully opt out.

How to Opt Out

You may opt out if you have alternate property and liability insurance coverage in place.

Opt-out deadlines:

  • Fall/Annual Residence: September 15
  • Winter Residence: January 15
  • Summer Residence: May 15

Students who do not opt out by this date will be automatically enrolled and charged the annual cost. Students who opt out will only be charged the $60.20 administrative fee to their student account. Students only need to opt out once and do not need to re-submit an opt-out request each semester.

Why Consider Keeping the Coverage?

This program offers:

  • Affordable, residence-specific coverage
  • Lower deductible than many homeowner policies
  • Coverage for temporary housing expenses that may not be included under a parent/guardian's policy
  • Primary coverage, which may help protect a family's claims-free discount on another insurance policy
