3-Minute Paper Competition for Trent Undergraduate Students

As the deadline for applications quickly approaches, the organizing committee for Three Minute Paper (3MP) would like to address some common questions:

What is a 3-minute paper?
It is an engaging and succinct 3-minute oral presentation about a focused research topic. Participants compete to demonstrate their knowledge and inspire their audience in 180 seconds, and they can only use three PowerPoint slides to support their talk. Learn more here.

When is the competition?
The competition will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018.

Do I have to be writing an undergraduate thesis to compete?
No. Participants should be in their third or fourth year of study at Trent, but they do not need to be completing an undergraduate thesis. Students may be in a reading course, may be completing a TCRC project, or writing a major paper. This work must include research, including (but not limited to) lab work, archival research, field work, surveys, interviews, or close reading of literature. The project should be underway or completed in the 2017-18 academic year. If you are interested, but not sure if you are eligible, send us an email.

What if I don’t have results for my research yet?
You can still participate. Your research is interesting, but it can take a long time to complete. Explain what you are studying and why it is significant to your field. Explain how you are going about your research and why this approach is appropriate or interesting. Suggest what you expect to find or what your preliminary findings indicate.

Why do I want to participate?
This is a great opportunity to build professional skills, including your presentation and communication skills, and participation in events like this look great on a resume or application for further study. In addition, preparing for the competition can help you to focus your ideas and support you in the writing of your paper.

This event showcases the great research opportunities for students at Trent, offers academic competition between colleges, and rewards the best presenters with great prizes!
