Dr. Thomas Miller attended Trent University between 1982 and 1986. In addition to completing his Honours degree in Chemistry, he was a varsity rower for three years, a Junior Senator and President of Peter Robinson College Cabinet. His interest in science and social responsibility led him to co-found the first chapter of Trent Student Pugwash.
After Trent he studied for a M.Sc. at the University of Manchester and then returned to Canada to work as a Health Policy Analyst for Health Canada. He studied medicine at McMaster University between 1988 and 1991, and completed his Family Medicine residency at McMaster in 1993. During that time he became a member of the research team for the “Health of Children in War Zones Project,” acting as the Principal Investigator for the Gaza Child Health Survey, conducted in 1996.
He returned to Peterborough in 1998 to work as an emergency physician at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC). From 2003 to 2011 he held the positions of Chief and/or Medical Director of Emergency Services at the PRHC. Dr. Miller earned the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) designation. He also holds the position of Assistant Professor, Adjunct, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Queen’s University.
In 2009-10 he was Co-Chair of the Trent Athletics fundraising committee for the new Carol Love Rowing/Paddling Tank. In 2011, he completed his term as Chair of the Arts, Culture and Advisory Committee for the City of Peterborough.
In recognition of 10 years of service to Trent University, Dr. Miller was presented with the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for his hard work and dedication to the university community.
Dr. Miller’s second three-year appointment to the Board of Governors began on July 1, 2015.
