Artist Profile Albert Mamvura
Born in Zimbabwe in 1954, the late Albert Mamvura was known for creating sculptures out of stone. His sculptures represent Shona myth, orature, and ontology. He was motivated by the will to form and to make known various pertinent aspects of the alpha Shona culture. Albert Mamvura’s art developed in style over the years, from the stylized figurative sculptures of the late 1970s to an Afro-modernist abstraction that encompasses a synthesis of Zimbabwean Afro-cubism and bio morphism that appealed to a global audience.
