The English Department is thrilled to announce the rebooted Margaret Laurence Writer in Residence program, which had been on a long hiatus. Our first writer in residence will be Waubgeshig Rice, author of the bestselling Moon of the Crusted Snow and Moon of the Turning Leaves. Waubgeshig will be at Traill College the last week of September and first week of October.
Welcome Waubgeshig Rice
Waubgeshig Rice is an author and journalist from Wasauksing First Nation.
He’s written four books, most notably the bestselling novel Moon of the Crusted Snow, published in 2018, and its sequel, Moon of the Turning Leaves, published in 2023.
He graduated from the journalism program at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2002, and spent most of his journalism career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a video journalist and radio host.
He also holds an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Nipissing University, and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, both received in 2023.
In addition to working as a full-time author, Waubgeshig is also a public speaker, storytelling mentor, and workshop facilitator, regularly participating in festivals, conferences, and other community gatherings across Turtle Island and around the world.
He speaks on creative writing and oral storytelling, contemporary Anishinaabe culture and matters, Indigenous representation in arts and media, parenthood and community responsibilities, and more.
He lives in Sudbury, Ontario with his wife and three sons.
While at Trent, Waubgeshig will take part in two public events: a talk at Trent’s Durham campus on Thursday, October 1st, and a talk at Symons campus on Thursday, October 8th. Both events are open to the public.
