How to Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa from within Canada

Overview of the Temporary Resident Visa application process 

Determine Eligibility Determine if you are from a visa requiring country.
PREPARE  Review the temporary resident visa application process.
WHEN TO APPLY 

We recommend applying 3 months prior to your plans to leave Canada.  
 
Important notes: 

  • Do not leave Canada until you obtain your new visa.  
  • Be cautious when booking flights before obtaining your visa.  
  • While your Temporary Resident Visa can expire while you are in Canada, we highly encourage you to keep it valid in case you need to unexpectedly leave Canada. 
APPLICATION FEES  $100.00CAD for application 
$85.00CAD biometrics fee, if applicable 
HOW TO APPLY  We recommend applying online through an IRCC Secure Account. 
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

All applicants require:

  • Recent education transcript (official)
    • myTrent > Academics > Transcript Request. 
  • A Letter of Enrollment
    • Graduate > myTrent > Academics > Verification of Enrollment.
    • Undergraduate/Certificate > myTrent > Register > International Verification of Enrollment.
  • Copy of Canadian Study Permit
  • Copy of valid passport 
  • Proof of financial support: you must prove that you can support yourself and the family members who will be with you while you are in Canada. We recommend proof of $10,000CAD an additional $4,000 for a first dependent family member, and $3,000 for each additional dependent family member. 
  • Digital Photo
  • Application for Temporary Resident Visa [IMM 5257] - The application form listed in your document checklist will be called Application for Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) Made Outside of Canada (IMM 5257). This is the form you need to fill out, even when you apply from inside Canada.
  • Additional documents based on their circumstances.
PROCESSING TIME  Refer to the IRCC website for temporary resident visa processing times.  
 APPLICATION INSTRUCTION GUIDE Refer to the IRCC temporary resident visa application instruction guide to find instructions on how to complete the application form. 
AFTER YOU APPLY  Remain in Canada until you obtain your new visa.
