Black History Month Cultural Opening: Celebrating Black Heritage Through Music

About the Event

Join us for an inspiring start to Black History Month with the Love Music Initiative, as we explore the roots and evolution of Black music, rhythm, and storytelling. This interactive cultural opening connects African heritage drumming to modern DJ culture, highlighting how traditional rhythms have shaped contemporary sound, identity, and community expression.

Through the Drum to DJ Assembly, participants will experience how African drumming traditions evolved into today’s DJ culture while building creativity, confidence, and community connection. Music, drumming, spoken word, and storytelling come together to celebrate the power of Black cultural expression, resilience, and positivity.

As part of the event, participants will also take part in a DJ 101 Workshop, an engaging introduction to the art of DJing. Learners will explore the basics of DJ culture, including equipment familiarity, beat matching, and the foundations of mixing. Delivered in a fun and interactive way, the workshop offers insight into the creative process DJs use to perform, along with practical tips and tricks.

This session will explore:

  • The evolution of Black identity through music, drumming, DJ culture, and spoken word

  • African drumming as the foundation of modern Black music traditions

  • Music and rhythm as powerful tools for storytelling, resilience, and community building

Whether you are new to drumming and DJ culture or a seasoned listener, this event offers a welcoming space to connect, reflect, and be energized by the cultural legacy of Black music.
