New Government Framework: Ancillary and Levy Fees
In January, the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) announced the Student Choice Initiative which establishes a new framework for non-tuition or ancillary fees. The framework divides fees into “essential” and “non-essential” categories. The government requires institutions to allow students to have the ability to opt out of non-essential fees when they pay their fees, beginning in the fall term 2019.
The University understands the important role that student groups and services play in building our community and providing a supportive and engaged student experience. As we adapt to the new government directive, we will do what we can to support a healthy levy system in support of student life on both our campuses. We are engaged in discussions with student leaders about different fees and will work with those levy groups whose fees are deemed optional to support them as they make a case for funding to our students.
“I am committed to working with our students to help communicate the importance of our student groups as a key part of the Trent experience,” said Nona Robinson, AVP Students. “Our campus would not be what it is without them.”
