Honouring Indigenous Peoples: Media Production & Development Assistant

We're a national Canadian charity, founded in 2014 and built largely on the volunteer energy of people who believe reconciliation isn't a slogan - it's a fire you keep tending. Our flagship program, the Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) Experience, brings Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth together on Indigenous territory for an Elder and Knowledge Keeper-guided gathering that's completely free to participants. We work coast to coast with Rotary clubs across the country, and our board is constitutionally split 50/50 between Indigenous and Rotarian voices - because reconciliation only works when it's built by everyone, together.
Duties
HIP is launching its first podcast, and we want a student to help build it from the ground up. You'll be shaping the sound of a national reconciliation story from day one - picking the format, helping choose the voices, recording interviews, and learning how a small, mighty team turns lived experience into something people want to listen to.
This is more than a placement. This is a chance to help move Canada forward on reconciliation - one conversation, one episode, one story at a time.
Podcasts live or die on story instinct. We've got the stories - youth who've stood around a fire with someone whose life looked nothing like theirs and walked away seeing the country differently. We need someone who knows how to find the moment in the tape and shape it into something worth someone's commute.
What You'll Do
- Help develop the podcast's concept, format, and episode structure from scratch
- Research and help identify guests - youth alumni, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, District Coordinators, and community partners from across Canada
- Prep for and record interviews with guests from across the country
- Assist with the launch of HIP's new podcast series, from first episode to release
- Assist with editing, sound, and post-production workflow
- Help build a release and promotion plan alongside our social media campaign
- Contribute to show notes and episode descriptions where relevant
- Bring your own ideas - this is a founding role, not a fill-in-the-blanks one
What You'll Gain
- Real, hands-on experience launching a podcast from concept to release - the kind of full-cycle credit that's hard to get anywhere else
- Direct mentorship from an Executive Director with over a decade building a national charity from the ground up
- A body of work you can point to and say, "I built that"
- A front-row seat to reconciliation work happening in real communities across the country
- The kind of story for your own resume that doesn't need embellishing
Location: Hybrid
- In-person meetings in Durham Region and Toronto
- Remote flexibility
- Potential travel for interviews where possible
Qualifications
- Curiosity, and a genuine interest in the people behind a good story
- A Communications, Media Studies, or related placement student (COMM4800Y or equivalent)
- Comfort with video and audio editing tools (Adobe Premier, Audacity, Adobe Audition, GarageBand, or similar)
- Strong writing and research instincts
Additional Assets
- Bonus: interest or experience in Indigenous-settler relations, reconciliation, or nonprofit storytelling
- Bonus: graphic design or social media skills for promoting episodes
