About
The Windy Pine Conference Centre, a 25-acre retreat on Lake Kushog in Haliburton County has been in operation since 1982, when the Canadian Studies Program at Trent University assumed its direction from Dr. Mary Northway, by whom it was willed to the Program. It is open from May 24 weekend until Thanksgiving each year and serves as a conference, retreat, meeting, workshop, and research venue for faculty, staff and students associated with Trent University.
Mandate
The Windy Pine Conference Centre serves to further the interdisciplinary academic mission of the Canadian Studies Department, and of its allied Departments and Programs, in the larger interests of Trent University. It welcomes students, staff, faculty and guests to use and enjoy the property responsibly, and with particular respect for its unique ecosystems, in furtherance of scholarly research, writing and planning, teaching, conversation and relaxation.
Booking Policy
Departments at Trent University have until February 1 to request space for retreats, as academic retreats have priority for booking over anything else. After that, priority goes to faculty or staff teaching or working in the SSC. Academic retreats arranged by the SSC can still bump "personal" bookings until April 1. There is a fee for use of the facilities, to cover costs of utilities and wear and tear on the property.
Facilities
This Centre consists of 6 rustic cabins with a sleeping capacity of 20-22 persons (maximum overnight of 18 at one time). The facility is divided into three separate areas. The main facility contains the cabins called Driftwood , Branch and Twig which can accommodate up to 14 people. Another area are the cabins called The Cabin and Cone which house the property manager each summer. Pinecliff, another separate area, will accommodate a party of 6 persons. An additional outbuilding, Jackpine, contains a workshop and shelter for canoes and a kayak.
