Why I chose Trent
What I love most about Trent is how flexible and welcoming it is for transfer students. I had explored other universities, but many only offered Fall intakes, which would have delayed my studies by almost eight months. Trent, on the other hand, gave me admission right away in the January intake, allowing me to continue learning without losing time. The moment I arrived, I could feel that Trent truly values students’ goals and supports them every step of the way.
My favourite place on campus
My favourite space on campus is by the river. I love sitting beside the river because it’s peaceful and calming — the view of the water and trees helps me relax and refocus after classes. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy nature, reflect, or even study quietly while feeling connected to Trent’s beautiful surroundings.
What I like to do outside of Academics
Outside of academics, I love playing badminton — it helps me stay active and connect with other students. I’m also volunteering as a Team Captain for the Trent Badminton Club, where I help organize games and support new players in learning the sport. It’s a fun way to unwind, build teamwork, and be part of the campus community.
My thoughts on the challenges encountered by new transfer students
One of the biggest challenges for new transfer students is figuring out which courses to take and how their transfer credits fit into their program. When I first joined Trent, I was a bit confused about course selection and program requirements because everything worked differently compared to my previous college. Adjusting to a new system, meeting new professors, and balancing academics with immigration paperwork was also a bit stressful at first. It can take time to get used to how things work, but the support at Trent really helps ease that transition.
A service, resource, or tool that helped me navigate my first year or first semester
Sylvia, my academic advisor, was amazing — she guided me through my course selection and explained my program step by step. Angie from International Advising was also incredibly supportive, especially with my study permit renewal and visa extension process. These two helped me feel more confident and settled. On top of that, CareerSpace helped me improve my resume and cover letter, making me feel ready for job applications. All of these services together made my first semester at Trent much smoother and enjoyable.
My one piece of advice for new transfer students
Never hesitate to ask for help and to get involved early. Trent has so many amazing people and resources ready to support you — from academic advisors who help you plan your courses to international advisors who guide you through important documents. Attend orientation events, join clubs, and connect with others; it’s the best way to feel settled, make friends, and truly feel part of the Trent community.
