Why I chose Trent
When I was in my final semester at Durham College, doing a field placement at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, I realized that I still wanted more out of my education. Trent has been a dream of mine since high school, and I saw the transfer process as the perfect opportunity, especially because of Trent's environmental programs and opportunities. I knew it was the right next step for me!
My favourite place on campus
I love the Lady Eaton Drumlin Nature Area as it is right on campus, easy to get to and use, and is the perfect space to reconnect with nature on campus! I also love the docks and rocks along the river, and spend a lot of time there between classes watching all the fish and aquatic life!
What I like to do outside of Academics
I enjoy anything outside, and spend a lot of time bird watching, hiking, or spending time with my cats.
My thoughts on the challenges encountered by new transfer students
I think the biggest challenge for me was the differences between college and university, especially with timetables, course options, and generally how the degree system works. I would’ve benefited from talking to someone or having a reading on what the main differences are that can be expected, and where to go when struggling with the changes.
A service, resource, or tool that helped you navigate your first year or first semester
The Student Accessibility Services office! Speaking to a student ambassador really helped me learn more about the resources that Trent is happy to offer, and helped me to stay on the right path and make sure I didn’t get lost during my transition into university!
My one piece of advice for new transfer students
Talk to everyone! Attend the information sessions, talk to the student association, talk to your professors during office hours, and if you are ever stuck or not sure where to go or what exactly your questions are, tell anyone and they will likely be more than happen to point you in the right direction! Help is everywhere and there’s no reason to struggle when there are so many amazing resources and people!
