In May of 2023, ten students and Professor Elkington embarked on a learning adventure of a lifetime. Many of us met for the first time at Cape Town International Airport, but it did not take long for us to become friends and collaborators in this beautiful country. Few anticipated how radically different we would be when we emerged from this wonderful, challenging, meaningful learning experience two weeks later. The guest lecturers were passionate, knowledgeable, and novel. We learned about the African concept of Ubuntu and the importance of Ubuntu to a systemic worldview and sustainability leadership in business. We visited the Sustainability Institute and learned how South Africans are enacting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in meaningful ways with scarce resources. We also visited a fully Sustainable agri-tourist-business farm named Babylonstoren that employs seven hundred workers, pays them well, and ensures everyone receives at least one free meal daily. We did so much more – but – don’t let me tell you, come and join us for the next SA Field Course in May 2024.
