2. Prepare Application [October-January]
*APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN BY MID NOVEMBER
The Study Abroad Application will be available from November until January on the myTrent portal underneath the 'Academics' tab.
Students are required to upload two documents before they submit their application:
Degree Checklist
- A Degree Check is an essential component of your application. Students must review the Tutorial: Video Tutorial: Let's complete the DIY Degree Check.Complete a DIY degree check using this document and bring that to your pre-booked academic advising appointment. Please upload your DIY degree check when booking your appointment in the Student Experience portal.
- Academic advising appointments must be completed before December 19th 2025 in order to apply for the 2026/2027 academic year. Your degree check helps you ensure that an exchange fits within your chosen degree path and timeline.
- Academic Advising will host workshops to introduce degree check tools. These workshops are highly recommended for anyone considering a Study Abroad. This workshop introduces a tool you can bring to your Academic Advising appointment in leiu of your DIY degree check. Workshop dates will be emailed to students who have completed pre-application orientations once they are released.
Statement of Purpose
- A Statement of Purpose should explain why you want to attend each host institution, and the educational benefits. The application outlines the responses we are looking for. Find an example here: Statement of Purpose Exemplar
3. Interview with Study Abroad Advisor [January-February]
Within 5-10 business days of submitting your application we will connect with you to let you know we've received your application. Once the application deadline has passed we will connect with you again to schedule a one-on-one meeting. Think of it like an informal a job interview. In this meeting we will review the process of studying abroad, outline the expectations, and answer any lingering questions.
After the interview we will begin the nomination process.
4. Nomination Period [March-June]
From these interviews the study abroad team will determine who we will nominate to each institution. Many of our partners don’t begin accepting nominations until April, but each institution has their own timeline. We ask for your patience during this time. Once the nomination is official, we will connect with you again.
5. Blackboard Course [February-July]
Blackboard will be used to keep track of assignments and required documents that you will need to complete before leaving for your exchange. Each assignment must be completed before a “placeholder” can be settled on your account - an action that allows Trent students to obtain credits abroad.
6. Pre-Departure Orientation Event [March]
This will be a mandatory event in March for all exchange students that is composed of presentations about immigration, health insurance, cultural adaptation, and mental health.
More details about this event will become available closer to the date.
7. Learning Agreement [April-September]
Once you have been nominated you will plan the courses you will be taking abroad. To do this you will need to complete a Learning Agreement for your studies. This document will be provided by Study Abroad after you attend our Orientation, and should be sent back to us ONLY when your course registration has been confirmed at your host institution.
If you need to receive specific transfer credits you will need to send an email to studyabroad@trentu.ca that includes:
1. Course syllabi from the host institution you want to attend, &
2. The courses you are hoping to get transferred back.
The rest of your courses will be accessed at a later date. The Learning Agreement must be submitted in order for us to process your transfer credits. This limits any complications that arise and ensures you stay on your degree path.
8. Funding and Bursaries
Study Abroad Bursaries
Once you have been accepted by the host institution you can apply for scholarships and bursaries. The application is found on myTrent > Academics > Study Abroad (Deadline TBD).
OSAP Funding
If you receive OSAP, you can also submit the financial form which notifies OSAP that you are studying abroad and makes you eligible for extra funding. This application is can also be found on myTrent underneath the 'Finances' tab (Closed for the Term).
There is a placement fee of $250, payable after you have been nominated to the host institution.
