Welcome to Trent: New Entrance Sign Symbolizes Beginning of a Journey

August 30, 2019

Locally-sourced and crafted gateway created to reflect Trent’s campus community and values

New and returning students, alumni, staff and visitors will be greeted by something new when they arrive on campus. A new welcome sign at the main entranceway has been created and installed and is ready for move-in day photo opps. The striking sign is designed to encourage the entire Trent community to strike a pose with friends, snap a selfie and share their #TrentU moments.

Located at the main entranceway on the West Bank of Trent University’s Symons Campus, the dynamic new welcome sign let’s all #TrentUBound students, and the community, know they have arrived on campus. The gateway features an impressive stone cairn, designed to symbolize the beginning of a journey.

The sign also draws inspiration (and materials) from the community that surrounds it, and is made of limestone and basalt stone quarried in the area. Drawing inspiration from Trent’s own picturesque landscape, the refreshed entrance sign is complementary to the campus’ iconic Ron Thom architecture and the beautiful natural surroundings. And wait until you see it at night – now complete with LED lights, the Trent letters and logo are illuminated in green in the dark.

“As beautiful as the sign is during the day, the night views from the north, south and on-campus are stunning – and the lit green beacon ensures a sense of place for Trent day and night,” notes Marilyn Burns, associate vice-president, Communications and Recruitment. “We hope that students and families, alumni and visitors will make the new sign the subject of photos and memory making that they will share."

The signage, like the Trent community, is as much about interaction and memory-making as it is about Trent’s academic prestige. It is hoped that the sign lends itself naturally to the campus as a place to be inspired and have some fun.

An added bonus is that all materials and labour for the new sign were locally sourced. The concept was designed by Basterfield and Associates. All stone was locally mined and processed by Drain Bros. The sign itself was created by Media Works in Millbrook and all electrical work was done by Dan Healey Electric.

See the new sign for yourself and share your #TrentUProud photos with us @TrentUniversity.
