Dr. May Chazan

Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Feminist and Gender Studies

Assistant Professor, Gender & Social Justice

Research interests: Activism, gender, feminist studies, aging and society, social change

Dr. May Chazan

Professor Chazan is investigating why and how older women in different contexts are organizing and networking in global justice movements, to provide critical insights into contemporary struggles for social change. Guided by critical feminist theory, Prof. Chazan is analyzing written materials, participating in international events and carrying out detailed interviews, focus groups and life histories to better understand the motivations of these older women. Her interdisciplinary research also looks at the many contributions older women make in working for change. Prof. Chazan works closely with community organizations, activists, artists, and movements, and is leading an activist research collective, Aging Activisms, through which she connects students, activists, scholars, and researchers across ages, genders, backgrounds, and abilities.

“This research will ultimately shift attention beyond the challenges associated with old age to the many contributions older women make in working for change.”

Inspiring students

Prof. Chazan loves to draw students into her work and prioritizes training students and research assistants as part of her research process. She also leads an activist research collective, called Aging Activisms, through which she connects students, activists, scholars, and researchers across ages, genders, backgrounds, and abilities.
