At Trent, every student is guaranteed access to at least one experiential, career-boosting learning experience.
Whether offered through your chosen degree program or through Careerspace, you will have the opportunity to apply what you learn in lecture to real-world work settings.
Through experiences such as research and work placements, you will not only gain a deeper understanding of the context for the theory and knowledge, but also the opportunity to explore your interests and acquire the skills and first-hand experience that will give you confidence to start your career when you graduate.
Work Placement in Healthcare Setting
Through Trent’s Biomedical Science B.Sc., students get the opportunity to gain real-world experience through Community Placements , which will see you dive into hands-on learning in a medical or health-care related setting, and prepare for successful careers in biomedical or applied health research, teaching, degree programs in medicine, or in the allied health profession
Complete an Honours Thesis
In your final year, you have the option to complete an independent research project in your topic of choice, supervised by a faculty member who is leading related research in the field. Through an honours thesis project, you'll develop core research skills, including the development of methodology, as well as qualitative analysis and quantitative reasoning as you draw conclusions based on the results of yourr study. You’ll also develop strong communication, critical thinking, time management and leadership skills as you take the lead in this learning experience with support from engaged faculty supervisors.
Community-Based Research
For more than 25 years, the Trent Community Research Centre has facilitated meaningful, and purposeful community-based research projects for students with organizations in Peterborough City and County, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Durham Region, and Northumberland County.
Through this initiative, you’ll see yourself helping a community partner—from government, to social service agencies, and conservation authorities, to name a few—find answers to a question that has originated directly from the work they do. Through your research project, you’ll see how discoveries are applied in the real world.
