External Funding

The first step in pursuing external funding opportunities is to contact our research facilitators, who can help you discover external sources of funding and provide up-to-date information about funding opportunities as well as the internal procedures and deadlines. By stating the intent to apply to a specific funding opportunity, the team will be able to ensure that you have all of the program updates and information bulletins as they become available from the funding agency.

Internal Deadlines

All funding opportunities have an internal deadline. The internal deadline is two weeks prior to the external published deadline.

The internal deadline allows our research facilitators to:

  • Review your application for eligibility and completeness;
  • Review the documentation of confirmed and unconfirmed contributions (whether cash or in-kind);
  • Secure external approvals/signatures/letters of support where necessary;
  • Provide feedback on the research proposal/application;
  • Identify the need for additional certifications (ethics, animal care, etc.); and
  • Advise on the external submission process and deadline.

In the case of “quota” programs, the internal deadline is usually at least 2-3 months prior to the external deadline. Your research project officer can provide information on internal review processes for all quota programs.

The research facilitators can be reached at researchsupport@trentu.ca

Calendar of Major Tri-Agency Funding Deadlines

Canada’s federal research funding agencies—Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)—together with the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), offer a wide-range of funding opportunities for researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and research institutions.

The integrated calendar lists the principal funding opportunities offered by the four agencies, including agency-specific programs and those that are jointly administered. It includes links to the related program webpage for more information on each opportunity. The search tool and filters can be used to quickly return results of specific interest, such as agency-specific or interagency programs with upcoming deadlines.

Non-Tri-Agency Funding Opportunities

The Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) is here to assist with the application process for all grants and award opportunities. By consulting with the ORI at the beginning of an application, even at the Letter of Intent stage, our research facilitators can guide you through the requirements of the funding opportunity, especially if the Letter of Intent was successful and a full application is forthcoming. The ORI can also assist co-applicants with applications submitted by researchers at other institutions.
