Transfer Credits

What are transfer credits?

Transfer credit refers to the course equivalencies granted towards a program of study based on acceptable academic degree or diploma level course work from an accredited post-secondary institution. Advanced standing and transfer credits may also be granted for some standardized advanced secondary school programs.

How do I see if I've been awarded transfer credit and for which of my courses?

To see what transfer credits you have received, log into your myTrent student portal > Academics > Transfer Credits. The left-hand side will be the courses completed at your previous institution, while the right-hand side will show you what course at Trent they equated to.

How do I apply to receive additional transfer credits?

If you have reviewed your transfer credits on the myTrent student portal and believe you may potentially be eligible for additional credit, you will need to submit the institutionally prepared course syllabi to nursingadmissions@trentu.ca.

Institutionally prepared course syllabi include;

  • a grading scheme
  • a list of required readings and assignments
  • expected learning outcomes
  • week-by-week schedule of learning objectives

Please submit your syllabi as individual PDFs, named by course code and title. We cannot accept brief calendar descriptions for transfer credit evaluations. Please allow at least four weeks for the evaluation process.

How are transfer credits evaluated for equivalency?

Transfer credit evaluation is a multi-step process that requires the coordination of multiple departments on campus. Our admissions department will first review that the courses you are requesting to be evaluated meets both Trent University's Transfer Credit Policy as well as the TFSON's Transfer Credit Policy (found in the Student Handbook).

If the evaluated courses are eligible for transfer, the full course syllabi will then be sent to the relevant academic department for review.

What are the different types of transfer credits?

General or Unassigned Transfer Credits

General or unassigned transfer credits are awarded for courses from your previous institution that do not align with Trent curriculum. Common reasons for general or unassigned credit to be granted include, but is not limited to, a) Trent does not teach a particular subject matter and b) the course from the previous institution did not cover the entire content of a similar Trent course.

These transfer credits will appear with the general department code, year, and credit. For example, "Arts Year 1 Unassigned, 0.5 credit".

You can use unassigned transfer credits towards the completion of the electives required for your degree, once they are the appropriate level. Year one is 1000-level, year two is 2000-level, and so on.

Direct Equivalency Transfer Credits

Direct equivalency transfer credits are awarded for previously completed courses that cover the entire content of a course at Trent. These transfer credits are noted on your academic record with a Trent specific course code and credit weight, e.g., BIOL 1050H 0.5 credit.

Direct equivalency transfer credits can be used towards completing required courses listed on your program's course map. If you receive a transfer credit that is a direct equivalency listed on the course map, consider that course completed. If you receive a direct equivalency credit that is not a required course on your program map, then you could use it towards a required elective as long as it is at the appropriate course level.

What should I do if I need to register for courses but I haven't received my transfer credit evaluation back yet?

If you need to register for courses but are unsure if you will receive a transfer credit for a required course, register as if you will NOT be receiving the credit. It is always easier to register and drop a course later in the summer than to try and add a course into your schedule late.
