Trent Co-op Student Helping the Next Generation Prioritize Health
Fourth-year Trent student supports youth through Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada placement, highlighting the impact of Work-Integrated Learning
Kendall Rose recalls that some of her earliest family memories include playing sports. Living an active life has always been a pillar of how she approaches the world. Now, the fourth year Health B.Sc. student is bringing those foundations into her paid co-op placement working with Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada.
Through her co-op experience, Kendall is helping the next generation of young women build and embrace those same active lifestyle skills, playing a key role in the Go Girls: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program. The initiative facilitates weekly sessions at elementary schools for girls aged 12 to 14.
This opportunity has helped Kendall translate her coursework into hands-on skills and provided her with a deeper understanding of practical ways to support youth, both physically and mentally. Each session focuses on physical activity, balanced eating, self-esteem, and communication skills, designed specifically for girls entering their teens.
“These are the ages where confidence is really starting to take shape,” Kendall explains. “Being able to contribute to that, even in a small way, feels incredibly important.”
Making a Difference Close to Home
Many Trent co-op experiences, including Kendall's, are strengthened by opportunities to work with local employers and organizations.
“Being able to work with youth in this community feels more personal,” she says. “You can see the impact right in front of you, and that’s incredibly motivating.”
Through this weekly mentorship, Kendall is helping create a space where participants feel empowered to step into the world as the best version of themselves, contributing to a stronger, more connected community.
Building Connections for the Future
Beyond the hands-on experience, co-op has also opened doors for Kendall’s future. Working closely with supervisors and team members at Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada has given her valuable insight into career pathways, while also helping her build a strong professional network.
