Tipi and Medicine Garden at Trent Durham Honoured with Landscape Ontario Award

Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area has received a Landscape Ontario Award of Excellence, specifically an Award of Merit for Construction, recognizing the creativity and craftsmanship incorporated into the Tipi and Medicine Garden amenities.

Unveiled in September 2024, the 30-foot Tipi offers a space for the Trent community to engage in cultural understanding, reflection, learning, and Indigenous traditions and reconciliation. The Medicine Garden is a tranquil space designed to support traditional practices and ceremonies.

“We extend our congratulations to Hank Deenen Landscaping on this well-deserved award. The Medicine Garden is a much-loved, and beautiful addition to our campus,” said Dr. Scott Henderson, vice president and head of Trent Durham GTA. “Thanks to the generous donors who made this possible, and to our faculty, staff and students who encourage us to continue to innovate and grow our special campus.”

The Tipi and Medicine Garden are also complemented by artist André Fournelle’s Arcade sculpture, which frames the area’s Healing Pathway and features arched elements that inspire reflection on journeys and transitions. The sculpture incorporates Anishinaabe words such as mno-bimaadiziwin (the good way of living) and niikaanigonaa (extending the blessings), bridging the Tipi and Medicine Garden with themes of guidance and community well-being.

This award from Landscape Ontario highlights Trent Durham GTA’s dedication to creating spaces that honour Indigenous heritage while embracing sustainability and architectural innovation.
