What it Takes to Keep a Championship Team Healthy
Second-year Kinesiology student Isabelle Urie gains athletic therapy experience supporting Trent Excalibur's championship-winning women's lacrosse team
When injuries altered her path of playing competitive hockey, second-year Kinesiology student Isabelle Urie skated in a new direction: helping other athletes stay healthy and perform at their best.
Isabelle is a recipient of Trent's Canada Wide Science Fair Scholarship and Specialist High Skills Major Scholarship and is making the most of the financial support, leveraging every opportunity to advance her pursuit of becoming a physiotherapist. Most recently, the provincial and national science fair champion took on the role of student trainer with the Excalibur varsity women's lacrosse team, working alongside professional staff to keep the players healthy on the road to winning the OUA championship this past season, the team's second Patterson Cup victory in a row.
"Watching the coaches and support staff in action taught me so much about what it takes to bring out the best in athletes," said Isabelle. "I saw how their technical expertise was just as important as their ability to build trust, boost confidence, and face adversity. It's inspired me to develop not only the hands-on skills I'll need as a physiotherapist, but also the ability to connect with and support people when and how they need it most."
Throughout the season, Isabelle committed 200 hours in the role, practicing and developing skills in injury assessment, taping applications, treatment modalities, and rehabilitation routines.
"I've learned so much from this experience, and I'm incredibly grateful to Trent for the financial freedom that helps make this possible for me, and to the players and staff for affording me this opportunity,” said Isabelle. “I hope every student can feel as supported and encouraged to put themself out there as I have."
