The University community is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Jean Murray Cole ’04 (hon), a renowned historian, writer, and dedicated volunteer. Dr. Cole was awarded an honorary degree from Trent in 2004 in recognition of her exceptional contributions to historical preservation and community leadership.

Dr. Cole served as president of the Peterborough Historical Society and oversaw the creation of the city’s new central library as chair of the Peterborough Public Library Board. She also served on the boards of The Ontario Historical Society and TVO. Her dedication extended to many other local organizations including the Canadian Canoe Museum, Lang Pioneer Village Museum, Christ Church Community Museum, and St. John’s Anglican Church. Through her work as the author and editor of eight books and numerous articles about the fur trade and local history, Dr. Cole significantly enriched our understanding of Canada’s past.

Dr. Cole is predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Alfred O. Cooper Cole (1925-1996), who served as Trent registrar and secretary of Senate in 1966, later joining the History department and holding the position of university historian.

The University extends heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Dr. Cole and all who were knew her.

To learn more about Dr. Cole’s life and legacy, review her archival records in the Trent University Library & Archives and read her full obituary.
