During the fall 2023 semester, students enrolled in Trent’s newest co-op streams across the humanities and social sciences embarked on their first paid work terms, gaining valuable insight into their respective industries and honing their skills through diverse workplace experiences.

Throughout their degree, co-op stream students complete three paid, full-time work terms, earning 12 months of relevant, practical experience that will give them a valuable edge upon graduation.

In celebration of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Month, students from the inaugural cohort share thoughtful reflections and learnings from their first co-op placements:

“In my work term with Oshawa Public Libraries, I learned how to collaborate with others across different departments. I’ve also learned how to create valuable professional relationships in the workplace, and how to connect with my coworkers and superiors.”

Carter Forester (Gzowski College), second-year Indigenous Studies co-op student, worked as an Indigenous History Researcher with Oshawa Public Libraries.

“My co-op experience taught me about advocacy, which in many aspects has also led to a deeper understanding of myself and others. “It has been an empowering opportunity that has given me the foundation to pursue journalism on social and global issues in the future.”

Abbey McIntyre (Lady Eaton College), second-year Gender & Social Justice co-op student, worked as an Education Facilitator with Kawartha World Issues Centre.

“Co-op is a route for students to discover themselves, their strengths, and their preferences before they step into the real world. Co-op work terms are a glimpse of the workforce before graduation. My mind has been open to a world of possibilities. I can’t wait to see what my future work terms hold for me.”

Iyiola Alade (Traill College), second-year Cultural Studies co-op student, worked as an International Recruitment Assistant with Trent International.

Applications for all Trent co-op streams for fall 2024 remain open. Apply today.
