Summer McConachie, a second-year student pursuing a degree in Child and Youth Studies degree, lives, breathes, and loves the residence experience at Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area.

When Summer was accepted to Trent, she was excited about the opportunity to join a residence community that would foster independence while assisting her in learning in a brand-new environment. She was drawn to the prospect of having access to a wide range of activities, courses, and extracurriculars and the potential to develop new skills and make friends who share similar interests. "From the moment I stepped on campus and learned about all the things I would have access to in residence, I knew it would offer many opportunities to invest myself in my university experience," said Summer.

Summer’s journey with Trent’s residence took its next big step when she joined the Student Housing team. Her involvement in the residence community at Trent University Durham has continued to grow and has held multiple student jobs including roles as a residence life don, service center assistant, and residence life and education assistant.

"Becoming part of this dynamic residence community has allowed for immense development: personally, socially, and academically,” said Summer. "Each day at Trent Durham is filled with creating life-long memories both inside and outside of my dorm room."

Summer's dedication to the student housing team has also been a significant aspect of her own student experience. As she explained, "Joining the Trent Student Housing team has benefited me immensely - both emotionally and professionally - as it fulfilled my dream of serving others while practicing meaningful work.

"This experience has greatly informed my future career of teaching, as it has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of the many complexities associated with living with students and develop empathy and compassion for those in my care."

Summer's passion for helping others and creating a positive and inclusive community is evident in all that she does. She truly embodies the spirit of Trent University Durham, and her impact on the campus will be felt for years to come.
