A unique new Bachelor of Arts degree in Logistics & Supply Chain Management launching at Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this fall will give students the technical, analytical and hands-on skills needed to meet the growing demand for leaders in the global supply chain.
“In the past few years, I have met with many municipal and business leaders to identify opportunities where we could connect graduates to the job market. Logistics was frequently identified as a significant and growing component of Durham’s economy, and has become even more significant as our economy recovers post-pandemic,” said Dr. Scott Henderson, dean and head of Trent University Durham GTA. “Those in the field noted the increasing complexity of supply chain operations, and a need for graduates with the mix of skills ready to tackle the most complex problems. The insights of our local business partners have helped us to shape a robust program that will help to produce the next generation of leaders in the logistics and supply chain industry.”
As one of the only undergraduate Logistics & Supply Chain Management degree programs of its kind in Canada, Trent’s new degree will prepare students with in-demand skills, such as managing supply chains, and the ability to analyze data and develop innovative solutions to supply chain and logistics problems. The degree will also prepare students to achieve the Certified Supply Chain Management Professional (CSCMP) designation.
“What differentiates this program from others is that Logistics & Supply Chain Management is usually offered as a Business Administration specialization or post-graduate degree,” explained Dr. Byron Lew, program coordinator of Logistics & Supply Chain Management and director of the Trent School of Business. “Our robust program will equip students with in-depth technical and analytical skills, which will really set them apart when it comes to seeking employment post-graduation.”
Putting theory into practice
With Trent Durham’s strategic location within the Greater Toronto Area, students can start to build connections with potential future employers and industry leaders located virtually on their doorstep. They will also have the opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice through a fourth-year work placement course, setting them up for success in the in-demand fields of purchasing, planning, production, logistics and distribution.
“Organizations, manufacturing systems, governments, corporations, non-profits and charities all rely on their supply chains to provide the goods and services at the right place, at the right time, and with the right quantity and quality,” said Professor Lew. “Supply chain management is considered to be the source of a business’s competitive advantage that formulates strategy, now more than ever.”
