More than a Certificate, Trent Durham Leadership Program Provides Students with Knowledge, Skills and Confidence
Campus initiative prepares students for success in many key areas of life
Camaraderie, workshops and rewarding experiences: the Trent Durham Leadership Program offers valuable lessons and key skills in communication, leadership and life itself. Students emerge from this multi-level program with official certificates that prove they are ready to take on the world.
“I wanted to be a part of something that would equip me for the future and prepare me for life’s challenges and opportunities,” says Sharon Akhigbe a second-year Business Administration student who participated in the program. “I hoped to attain skills to resolve conflicts, handle tasks with determination, and have fun while doing it.”
Problem-solving skills and personal growth
The program provides a variety of constructive workshops, such as “Adulting 101,” “Money Matters,” “Presentation Skills,” “Upstander Intervention,” and “Conflict Resolution.”
“I gained interpersonal, communication, conflict mediation, and life-saving skills through these workshops,” stated Mari Angelica Galangco, a third-year English Literature Teacher Education Stream student .
The flexible program accommodates student schedules, various learning styles and areas of interest, boosting confidence each step of the way. Students engage in campus clubs and gain volunteer experience in the community. They also have opportunities to organize and present workshops.
Opportunities await
“It is set up to continuously dive deeper into leadership skills as students progress through the program,” explains Chris Nelan, student life coordinator at Trent Durham. “Each achieved level offers further insight into how leadership skills can benefit their lives and those around them. These skills are transferrable to any career and can be used to promote their own knowledge when they apply for jobs.”
Taylor Collins is a fourth-year student in Psychology and Child and Youth Studies. She joined the program to build and refine skills and learn what it means to be a true leader. “By helping me become a better leader and encouraging me to get involved in campus activities, the program has provided networking opportunities,” observes Ms. Collins. “They may very well improve my future job prospects.”
“I am certain that this program will help me in the future,” affirms Ms. Galangco. “As someone who is on the pathway to becoming a teacher, it will help me become a leader and mentor to my future students.”
