Technical test of ECS includes Alertus system and app

A message from the Risk Management Department

A test of the Trent Emergency Communication System (ECS) will take place on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 12:45 p.m. at the Peterborough campus and 1:00 p.m. at the Durham GTA Campus.

The system test includes text messages on Trent office phones, voice messages on speaker systems and text pop-ups on digital signs and Trent imaged computers.

If you have downloaded the Alertus app, you will also receive a text alert on your mobile device. Havent’ downloaded the app yet? Review details on how to download the free Alertus app and stay informed during an emergency situation. Downloading Alertus today will ensure that you receive our emergency test message.

The ECS is tested once per semester to familiarize the Trent community with the system and ensure that it is functional in case of an emergency. Examples of emergencies include fire, violent intruders, hazardous materials spills, and tornados.

NOTE: The ECS is not activated for class cancellations, event notifications or other situations that do not constitute significant danger.

We also use the opportunity to conduct a five-minute drill to remind everyone of the Evacuate, Barricade and Defend protocol and ask that everyone work through how they would respond if a lockdown announcement is made. This protocol is designed to help protect you from an armed intruder. Detailed instructions are available on the Campus Security website. We encourage you to review these procedures before the test. The Alertus announcements will simulate those that would be made in a real armed intruder incident. As this is just a drill, please do not physically evacuate the campus.

Please notify the Risk Management office at ecstest@trentu.ca of any message transmission issues.

Your co-operation is appreciated. Thank you for putting your safety and the security of our Trent community first.
