Excalibur defeat Toronto Varsity Blues in program's first ever home playoff game, setting up quarterfinal matchup against Ontario Tech
The Trent Excalibur (8-5) men's soccer team has advanced to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) quarterfinals for the first time in program history following a 4-3 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (5-4-4) on Wednesday evening at Justin Chiu Stadium.
In the program's first-ever home playoff game, Trent got off to a strong start as Warren Chambers (Scarborough, ON) opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Leo Frans (Ottawa, ON) doubled the Excalibur's lead in the 21st minute before John Moncada (Scarborough, ON) found the back of the net just two minutes later, assisted by Michael Mouratidis (Toronto, ON), to give Trent a commanding 3-0 lead. Toronto's Schifano responded in the 39th minute, sending the teams into halftime with Trent leading 3-1.
The Varsity Blues battled back in the second half, with Joseph scoring in the 70th minute before Tome found the equalizer six minutes later to tie the match 3-3. With the score still tied after regulation and a scoreless overtime period, the match was decided in a penalty kick shootout. Excalibur goalkeeper Owen Schultz (Peterborough, ON) made a crucial save to help Trent secure a 4-2 shootout victory and advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history.
Trent will now travel to face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (7-3-2, second in East Division) in the OUA quarterfinals on Saturday, October 24, at 3 p.m. The Ridgebacks had a first-round bye in the opening round. In the team's only match-up this season, Trent defeated Ontario Tech 4-0 in Oshawa in the opening game of the season for both squads on August 29.
Saturday's quarterfinal matchup will be livestreamed at OUA.tv, with the winner advancing to the OUA semifinals.
