Trent University Mourns the Passing of Professor Robert Winslow
Robert Winslow, founder of 4th Line Theatre, was a Cultural Studies instructor for more than three decades
Trent University is saddened to learn of the passing of Cultural Studies instructor Robert Winslow, a beloved member of Trent’s theatre community who shared his passion for performance, storytelling and community with generations of students for more than three decades.
Robert’s connection with Trent began long before he joined the University as a faculty member. In the 1970s, Robert took a summer course in modern theatre at Trent taught by former Cultural Studies chair and Professor Emeritus Ian McLachlan. The experience sparked a friendship and creative partnership that would span decades, with the pair launching a theatre, The Union, in downtown Peterborough and writing 10 plays together.
Robert later brought his artistic and operational flair to local arts in the region as the founder of 4th Line Theatre in Millbrook, Ontario. Then he made his return to Trent in the early 90s as an instructor in the Cultural Studies department, bringing his professional experience into the Trent classroom, teaching theatre and performance workshops and courses until his passing in 2026.
“Whether Rob was working as a director, teacher or member of the community, he was always helping people tell their stories,” said Professor McLachlan. “He had this brilliant ability to help people let go of their fear of performance and to make theatre feel alive. Rob was important to people in this community on so many different levels, and his impact will continue to reach far beyond the stage.”
The University extends its sincere sympathies to Robert’s family, friends, and all who knew him at Trent.
