Ministry of Natural Resources Funding Fuels Research to Protect Ontario’s Waterways and Wildlife
$122,000 in funding from Ministry of Natural Resources to support three projects tackling climate stress, fisheries, and freshwater ecosystems
Trent University researchers are advancing new approaches to understanding and protecting Ontario’s natural environments, with support from a $122,000 provincial grant through the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
Three Trent-led projects focused on aquatic systems and wildlife resilience will each share the funding. The research includes developing a new aquatic stress index, studying how wildland fires affect boreal lake fish communities, and analyzing the genetics of Lake Superior brook trout populations.
Funding through the MNR reflects Trent’s depth in environmental science and the University’s close collaboration with Ministry researchers based on campus, where a shared research ecosystem helps academic insight and applied conservation work to move forward together.
“Trent University and the Ministry of Natural Resources have a long and strong history of working together to advance healthy and sustainable environments and communities,” said Cathy Bruce, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “This funding from the Ministry strengthens Trent's leadership in aquatic ecosystems, water quality, and population genetics. Our researchers are leading discoveries alongside many MNR scientists based at Trent, amplifying research insights and evidence that guide decision making in conservation and sustainable development.”
With Ontario home to more than 30,000 species and one fifth of the world’s fresh water, the need for data-driven environmental policy, management, and conservation continues to grow. Trent’s research projects contribute directly to that effort.
“By investing in these innovative research initiatives, our government is ensuring that Peterborough continues to lead the way in environmental stewardship and scientific discovery,” said Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough-Kawartha. “These projects at Trent University represent a vital intersection of academic excellence and practical conservation. This targeted provincial support provides our local researchers with the tools they need to protect our natural resources, while simultaneously fostering the high-tech expertise that will drive our regional economy for years to come.”
