Dr. Leibing will discuss the important development of the preventative turn in dementia research, as a shift from mostly genetic explanations to more hopeful ones based on managing risk factors. Dementia prevention can be a real chance for better aging, but this talk also looks critically at the framing and contexts of recommendations, scientific debates and public health campaigns. This will be an exciting opportunity for discussion about what dementia prevention means today and into the future for the everyday experience of aging.
Dr. Annette Leibing is a Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the Universite de Montreal, a medical anthropologist widely recognized for her work on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's deseases, aging and psychiatry, pharmaceuticals, elder care and futurities. She is also a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (Hanse-Wissenschaftskooleg) in Germany and currently the co-creator of a book of short stories about forgetting.
