Trent Marks Pride Month with Flags, Community, and Conversation
Celebrating Pride through student-led initiatives, collegiate events, and research profiles
A new Pride flag was raised inside Trent’s Bata Library this June, marking Pride Month and complementing Pride flags displayed in the Student Centre on the Peterborough campus and in Building A at Trent Durham.
The flags join with a number of initiatives across both campuses that reflect Trent’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and fostering a sense of belonging for all students, staff, faculty, alumni, and visitors.
“There are a number of Pride related initiatives at Trent University that foster inclusivity and that hold space for voice and empowerment,” says President Cathy Bruce. “Part of what our University can, and will, do is to continue this work for whole community success and support.”
Pride Month activities at Trent include student-led events like group trips to the Durham and Toronto Pride parades, a Trent Alumni Pride Mixer in Toronto, and collegiate programming such as Pride picnics. Stories shared throughout the month and year-round also highlight academic research, teaching, and advocacy advancing 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusion and allyship.
“Pride Month gives us a moment to celebrate and amplify 2SLGBTQQIA+ voices, but inclusivity at Trent is a year-round commitment,” says Dr. Scott Henderson, vice-president and head of Trent University Durham GTA. “We are always working to build a more welcoming campus culture that is strengthened by its diversity. It’s embedded in who we are as a university, and in the way we support one another every day.”
Support is also available through year-round education and programming, facilitated by teams in Student Affairs, Student Wellness, and the Equity & Human Rights Office as well as Student Recruitment. Initiatives include confidential discussion groups like Out on Campus and Trans Peer Outreach – facilitated in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association – and free positive space training (RISE+) to equip students and staff with the tools and confidence to foster a supportive campus community.
While Pride Month may be one part of the calendar, at Trent, the commitment to equity and belonging extends far beyond June – a reminder of what it means to be part of a campus community where everyone belongs.
