Challenging the Hollywood Notion of Resisting Aging
An aging ‘reality check’ with Trent's Centre for Aging and Society’s Dr. Sally Chivers
Dr. Sally Chivers, internationally renowned researcher on the cultural politics of aging and disability, podcast host, and a founding member of Trent Centre for Aging and Society, says society needs to rethink the idea that we should be ashamed and afraid of taking more trips around the sun. Professor Chivers studies ageism with a lens on how it’s represented in film and books as these tend to be significant influences how we view ourselves, as individuals and as a culture. “I think that’s the way we could shift how we think about aging, stopping the endless comparisons of our bodies to those we see or read about pop culture,” says Prof. Chivers.
Watch Prof. Chivers flip the script on aging as she explores both positive and negative examples from film and tv over the years and how we can push forward with a little more positivity.
