Transitioning from Trent Durham: Hands-on Research at School Earns Grad Job at Psych Practice
Hailey Collins credits lab practicum as key to her confidence in performing real-life psycho-educational assessments
Hailey Collins acquired important research skills at Trent University Durham GTA that helped her land a job at a private practice immediately after graduating this year.
“I worked as a practicum student collecting data in Dr. Nancie Im-Bolter's Language and Cognition Lab, and really enjoyed it,” said Ms. Collins who earned an Honours B.Sc. in Psychology with a specialization in Psychological Development.
Through her research at Trent Durham she discovered that children with stronger executive function skills had better strategies in response to a social conflict.
“It was because of this experience that I gained employment as a psychometrist, conducting psycho-educational assessments.”
Ms. Collins was also founder and president of the Trent in Oshawa Psychology Society (TOPS).
“This experience made me feel like a strong part of the Trent Durham community and pushed me to experience personal growth through my leadership role.”
While at Trent Durham, Ms. Collins received a full tuition scholarship for most of her academic career. She was honoured with the Graduating Citizenship Award, the Academic Excellence Award and achieved the highest average amongst Honours graduates on campus.
Ms. Collins will complete a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Toronto.
