Student Achievement Celebrated at Trent University Durham GTA 2019 Convocation

May 30, 2019

Philanthropist and local business developer Jerry Coughlan to be honoured at May 30 ceremony alongside graduates

Durham GTA graduates

Trent University Durham GTA will celebrate the accomplishments of graduates from a wide array of programs and Durham Region developer and philanthropist Jerry Coughlin will be presented with an honorary degree at the University’s 2019 Convocation ceremonies on Thursday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at the Tribute Communities Centre (99 Athol St. East) in Oshawa.

“Convocation is a special time of year at Trent University, and this year is no exception for Trent Durham,” said Joe Muldoon, head of Trent University Durham GTA. “Conferring degrees on students across our growing roster of programs, including the first cohort of graduates from our Child & Youth Studies program, provides the University with an opportunity to celebrate our successes as a community as well as look to the future. And what a bright future we have, with exciting plans to continue to build our growing community of scholars with the addition of a new residence and academic building opening in fall 2020.”

Trent’s president and vice-chancellor Dr. Leo Groarke will preside over convocation at the afternoon ceremony, during which degrees will be granted in the following Trent University Durham GTA programs: Business Administration, Anthropology, English Literature, History, Communications & Critical Thinking, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Child & Youth Studies, Media Studies, Gender & Women’s Studies, and Philosophy. Postgraduate certificates in Human Resource Management and Marketing & Entrepreneurship will also be granted.

In addition to honouring 190 graduates, Trent will bestow an honorary degree, the University’s highest honour, upon Jeremiah (Jerry) Coughlan, a well-known developer and philanthropist who is revered by the local community for his generosity, humility and kindness.

After learning of the honour, Mr. Coughlan said, “As a simple man of humble beginnings, I am greatly honoured to be given this honour. I wish the University continued success.”

The Durham GTA ceremony marks the first of 10 Convocation ceremonies this year at Trent University. Nine ceremonies will be held at the Peterborough campus from June 3 to 7. Across both campuses, Trent will honour over 1,800 members of the 2019 graduating class.
