Demand reflects "a paradigm shift in today’s business environment," says Trent Durham's Dr. Ali Vaezi

Trent Durham Professor says the need for supply chain management talent is high and will continue to grow.

The global business landscape is changing. At the heart of this transformation lies the unprecedented demand for professionals who understand the vital role supply chains play — and the skills to manage them.

Industries are grappling with complex global networks, digital transformation and evolving consumer expectations. The solution to many of these issues is education and skills training.

One of the driving forces behind the demand for educational programs in supply chain management is the realization that supply chain disruptions can have far-reaching implications.

Remember the shortage of basic supplies like toilet paper or the challenges of getting lumber and building supplies? The effects triggered by the global pandemic highlighted vulnerabilities within supply chains, leading to organizations prioritizing supply-chain management and efficiencies.

Today’s successful businesses are hungry for professionals equipped to mitigate risks, optimize processes and maintain success throughout unforeseen issues.

Technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics and big data analytics are revolutionizing operations and contributing to increased need for skilled supply chain professionals.

At Trent University Durham GTA, our first-of-its-kind Logistics and Supply Chain Management program includes training on these technologies. This industry-focused degree also equips students with the theory and practice required to understand, model, and solve complex supply-chain problems in the modern world of business.

A thoughtfully designed supply-chain education program, like Trent Durham’s, not only aligns with the demands of the job market but also prepares graduates to navigate the complexities of today’s business landscape and improve the ethicality and sustainability of organizations.

Supply-chain-management skills are needed in all sectors — health care, retail, technology, to name a few. Today’s students will be well positioned for career success, at companies and organizations large and small, located right here in the thriving Durham Region, and worldwide. The opportunities are endless.

This article, penned by professor and program coordinator of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management program Dr. Ali Vaezi, Trent University Durham GTA, originally appeared in Durham Metroland.
