Three students have been awarded the Dr. Jerry Coughlan Hat Trick Award for demonstrating resilience, humility, and kindness, particularly in times of financial challenge.

Thanks to the generous donation of $517,500 from the Jeremiah F. Coughlan Foundation, the Dr. Jerry Coughlan Hat Trick Award consists of three annual $5,000 scholarships, which aim to enable students to pursue their educational dreams by alleviating some financial burden. The award is open to second to fourth-year students, nominated by professors, who embody the power of community support for positive change.

Dr. Jerry Coughlan gave back to his community by supporting the construction of essential facilities. Trent University recognized his outstanding contributions with an honorary doctorate of law in 2019. His legacy of philanthropy continues to inspire through the Dr. Jerry Coughlan Hat Trick Award at Trent University Durham GTA.

In the words of Dr. Scott Henderson, Dean and Head of Trent University Durham GTA, "We hope our students follow in Jerry Coughlan’s footsteps of always striving to be your best and supporting others whenever you are able.”

The three inaugural recipients of the award are:

  • Mehmood Kohistani, a recent graduate of the Child and Youth Studies program at Trent University Durham, is being recognized for inspiring positive change by sharing his lived experiences. The award will support his pursuit of a graduate degree and help his family and friends facing challenges in the Middle East.
  • Christina Auger is a fourth-year student earning a double major in psychology and sociology. As a mature student balancing her studies with full-time parenting, Christina will use the award to continue her research and leadership to advocate for the welfare of children and their families.
  • Aidan Davidson is a recent graduate of Trent Durham's English Literature program and Teacher Education Stream. Aiden is recognized for displaying unwavering support for his peers and playing a pivotal role in the orientation team.

Trent University Durham GTA presented the inaugural Jerry Coughlan Hat Trick Awards at a special undergraduate award ceremony on November 15.
