Tapscott-Lopes Business & Society Lecture Continues Tradition of Excellence with CEO of Toronto International Film Festival
Former Trent University chancellor Dr. Don Tapscott and Trent governor emerita Dr. Ana Lopes proud to host Cameron Bailey for 2023 lecture focusing on how to grow arts and cultural hubs
The Tapscott-Lopes Business & Society Lecture, which has a long history of bringing prominent speakers to Trent University and the community to address issues of values and ethics as they pertain to business and society, is proud to host a free public discussion with the CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Cameron Bailey – named one of Toronto’s 50 most influential people - will deliver the 2023 lecture entitled “Creating an Urban Cultural Hub” on Thursday, November 23 at both Trent University Durham GTA and the Peterborough campus as part of the ongoing Community Speaker Series.

(hon) C.M. “TIFF has been a part of the lives of art lovers around the globe for nearly 50 years. It hosts the world’s biggest film festival each September – attracting audiences and creators to world-class programming. We look forward to Cameron sharing his insights with students, alumni staff, faculty, and community members so they can reach further and think more deeply about the role of the arts and cultural sector in our very challenging world.”
The lecture series was created by Dr. Tapscott, the University’s first alumni chancellor, and Dr. Ana P. Lopes, ‘18 (hon) LL.D. (hon) C.M., governor emerita of Trent Board of Governors. Tapscott and Lopes are thought leaders, visionaries, and long-standing champions of Trent University and a liberal arts education. They have been generous benefactors and dedicated volunteers for many decades, and their contributions can be seen in all aspects of the Trent Experience. Past Tapscott-Lopes Lecture speakers include Michael McCain, head of Maple Leaf Foods, and David Suzuki, world-renowned environmentalist and broadcaster.
As this year’s speaker, Bailey will draw from his own success to discuss how to grow arts and cultural organizations. In his engrossing and highly customized talks, Bailey will trace what it takes to grow a cultural organization including engaging staff at all levels, harnessing the energy of local citizens and politicians, and capturing global attention.
As CEO of TIFF, Bailey is responsible for setting its strategic direction and leading its teams towards fulfilling TIFF's mission to transform the way people see the world through film. Under his leadership, TIFF continues to grow in size and significance year over year. Bailey has programmed and hosted TIFF's highly successful subscription series Reel Talk; headed its Perspective Canada series; and founded its Planet Africa section. Prior to TIFF, Bailey curated films for Cinematheque Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the National Film Board of Canada, and Australia's Sydney International Film Festival.
Media and members of the public are welcome to attend the Tapscott-Lopes Business & Society Lecture on Thursday, November 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Trent University Durham’s Advanced Learning Centre (11 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa) and at 7:00 p.m. in Peterborough at Stohn Hall in the Student Centre at Trent (1600 West Bank Drive).
