Recognizing the challenges posed by a competitive rental market, Trent University is taking significant strides to enhance its student housing offerings and provide comprehensive support for those seeking off-campus accommodations. Trent's Student Housing department is launching a series of initiatives designed to ensure a seamless transition for students and to foster a sense of belonging within the local community. 

Smooth transition with free moving services  

Moving can be challenging, so Trent's off-campus housing program provided moving trucks to students relocating to their new off-campus homes this summer. This service, which Student Housing hopes to offer in the future as well, aided 16 students in Durham and Peterborough to move into their new residences. This initiative ensured that students could easily transition to their new living spaces within the community. 

Comprehensive housing support for students

Allocating $27,500 in rental emergency support for Peterborough, and $19,000 in supports for Durham, this initiative ensures students facing unforeseen circumstances that impact their housing situation receive the support needed to maintain stability during their studies. 

Trent University has also expanded its team of full-time staff and student employees dedicated to providing support for students seeking housing off-campus. These knowledgeable professionals are equipped to guide students through the rental process, helping them understand tenant rights and connect with reputable landlords. 

"Our goal is to equip students with the necessary tools and resources to make informed decisions, effectively navigate challenges, and foster a deep sense of belonging in their new communities,” shares Nicole Sullivan, the community housing coordinator with Student Housing. “Through our housing search resources, scam supports, and student advocacy, we aim to empower students at every step of their housing journey, enabling them to thrive academically and personally." 

Expanding housing options for students

Recognizing the importance of accessible housing options for upper-year students, Trent University has entered into a land lease with Residential Development Corporation (RDC) that will see RDC build and operate a new building with approximately 324 beds for upper-year students on Water Street in Peterborough. This expansion, expected to be completed in 2025, will offer upper-year students a desirable and convenient living environment close to the Symons Campus.  

The University also has acquired four homes near Catharine Parr Traill College to provide students with attractive housing options in the heart of downtown Peterborough.

"By expanding our housing options and implementing comprehensive support programs, we strive to ensure an enriching living experience while nurturing strong connections within our local community." 

Vision for thriving communities

Trent University has set its sights on further expanding accommodation options. The University plans to add another 500-700 beds to the Symons Campus by 2027 through the building of a new college and replacement of Otonabee College residence.
