Josh Russell, Otonabee College, B.Sc. Honours Conservation Biology

When Josh Russell heard about the student experience at Trent University, he knew it would be a perfect place to study conservation.

“Being a Conservation Biology student at a campus surrounded by nature areas is beneficial for labs and experiences,” said Josh. “Everything feels more connected when you can just take a few steps outside lecture halls to learn about environmental assessment, stream sampling techniques, or woodland dynamics.”

Now in his third year of the Conservation Biology program, Josh is pushing the boundaries of his learning. This summer, he is conducting research in Nunavut on the northward encroachment of shrubs due to seasonal changes in snow cover.

Josh says he is able to take full advantage of the immersive student experience at Trent because the community made the transition seamless.

“Luckily for any student, the Trent community is one of the most welcoming communities you can join. When I started at Trent, I knew I wanted to become involved in a club or group at Trent to make friends and meet others with similar interests as me. I decided to join the Biology Undergraduate Society as a first-year representative; and am now the president of our club. I love being a part of a community that is as eager to learn and help others as I am.”
