UN Peace Prize winner Dr. Ramin Jahanbegloo to discuss time in Iranian jail

The Cultural Studies Ph.D. program at Trent University invites the community to attend a free public lecture by Dr. Ramin Jahanbegloo in support of his new book Time Will Say Nothing on Thursday, October 2, 7:30 p.m. at Bagnani Hall, Traill College.

In late April 2006, Professor Jahanbegloo was incarcerated in solitary confinement in Iran’s notorious Evin prison while on his way to an international conference in Brussels. He had been arrested in connection with suspected foreign-assisted plots to instigate the Iranian intelligentia but no prosecution took place.

Thanks to human rights groups and international media attention, Prof. Jahanbegloo was released four months later. Upon surviving this ordeal, he wrote Time Will Say Nothing, a compassionate account of his experiences. In 2009, he was awarded a United Nations Peace Prize for his work promoting non-violence.

The civic philosopher, Ramin Jahanbegloo, works tirelessly to advance non-violent democratic change in the global arena through intercultural dialogue. His prison ordeal that finds expression in his memoir, Time Will Say Nothing, is both a call to action and a contribution to the literature of testimony.

Prof. Jahanbegloo is currently the York-Noor Visiting Chair in Islamic Studies at York University. Copies of his book will be available for purchase at the lecture
