Trent’s first alumni chancellor and celebrated author Dr. Don Tapscott ’66, has released his latest book, and the contents are sure to resonate with his alma mater.

Big Ideas: Chancellor Don Tapscott Speaks to a New Generation includes a collection of speeches Dr. Tapscott delivered to students, as well as articles for the Harvard Business Review, The Globe and Mail, and other journals written during his time as chancellor.

“Don Tapscott accomplished so much while serving as Trent University’s chancellor,” reflects Trent president and vice-chancellor Dr. Leo Groarke, “His leading-edge thinking, sense of humour and warm personality have inspired today’s Trent students to follow in his footsteps and live a life of consequence.”

An engaging leader who inspired students to live a principled life of consequence

A thought leader on the impacts of technology on business and society, Dr. Tapscott became chancellor of Trent University in 2013. Over the course of six years, he engaged students in discussion on topics ranging from the value of a Liberal arts education to how to thrive in the digital age, and how to be resilient. Those lectures have been collected in this book. The accompanying articles explore ground-breaking ideas on the impact of the blockchain on higher education, the dark side of the digital economy, and the challenges that await young people graduating from university.

“I am delighted that Trent has compiled my speeches and writings to students during my period as chancellor,” says Dr. Tapscott. “I hope the book will be helpful and inspiring to young people and others as they recalibrate their lives. As I said to students, by all means go out and be prosperous. But we need more from you in this troubled world. My hope is that you will live a principled life of consequence and I hope this book will be helpful to a new generation.”

Latest published work part of  a series of well-read titles

A recipient of the Order of Canada, Dr. Tapscott has authored 16 books, including Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, which has been translated into over 25 languages. As the co-founder and executive chairman of the Blockchain Research Institute, he has led the definitive investigation into enterprise applications of distributed ledger technologies and the trivergence of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things.
