The draft Trent Lands and Nature Areas Plan makes a resilient, connected system of natural areas a priority for the Symons campus.

University Green Network (UGN) – a conceptual system intended to foster and support stewardship of the land across campus and deliver on Trent’s commitment to maintain 60% of the campus as Nature Areas and greenspace

In planning the Peterborough Campus of the future, Trent University has placed the natural environment as a central priority. The draft Trent Lands & Nature Areas Plan proposes the creation of a University Green Network (UGN) – a conceptual system intended to foster and support stewardship of the land across campus and deliver on Trent’s commitment to maintain 60% of the campus as Nature Areas and greenspace.

The UGN takes a systems-based approach to land planning that directly addresses concerns about fragmentation of the natural environment, connectivity for wildlife, and the need for a variety of habitats to promote biodiversity. The UGN connects the diverse types of green spaces on campus that serve a variety of functions including nature areas, wetlands, woodlands, open country habitats, agricultural areas, naturalized areas, campus quads and fields, and wildlife corridors.

The Plan includes defined goals for the UGN, including environmental resilience and integrity; learning and discovery, and environmental leadership and innovation.

The Draft Trent Lands Plan is available for review and comment until Monday, January 4, 2021.
