Mr. McCrillis was a Trent student and husband to Professor Elizabeth McCrillis

The Trent community is saddened to learn of the passing of Maury McCrillis, Trent Business student and husband to Psychology professor Dr. Elizabeth McCrillis.

Born in the United States, but having spent most of his life in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, before moving to Ontario with his wife, Mr. McCrillis was an avid and accomplished bagpiper. He piped at Trent Convocation ceremonies, played with the Cape Breton Highlanders, a Canadian Forces Reserve Pipe Band, and was a devoted member of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment family and the Hasty P’s Pipe Band.

Mr. McCrillis had recently enrolled as a student at Trent, and was working part-time toward a business degree and was “developing a true passion for learning about and advocating for the North” according to his obituary.

The tribute to Mr. McCrillis further states: “He was a man who was always growing, learning, teaching, and loving. His zest and enthusiasm, his razor-sharp focus, and his appreciation for the little things in the everyday mundanity of life is a lesson to us all.”

The University extends heartfelt sympathies to Mr. McCrillis’s family and friends, and to all who knew him at Trent University.

In honour of Mr. McCrillis, the flag atop the Bata Library will be lowered to half-mast position on May 22.

Donations in memory of Mr. McCrillis and in support of his family can be directed to the family’s Go Fund Me page.
