Trent University Launches New Four-Year Kinesiology Degree
Program emphasizes experiential learning opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities, working with everyone from Olympic hopefuls to senior citizens
A new four-year Kinesiology degree, launching at Trent University in September, will feature hands-on placement opportunities allowing students to gain vital career experience in the competitive healthcare sector working with all clients from seniors and Indigenous groups to athletes and future Olympians.
“Practical experiential-based learning is a very important and necessary component in the study of kinesiology,” explains Dr. Sarah West, incoming program coordinator of Kinesiology at Trent. “This program and Trent’s outstanding facilities will allow us to transition our students into well-educated kinesiologists, and provide them with the experience they need to succeed.”
The new Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) honours in Kinesiology degree builds on Trent’s long-standing reputation as a hub for the development of healthcare talent. Well-integrated with the renowned Trent/Fleming School of Nursing, and focused on active, student-centered learning, this program boasts a robust combination of courses including anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, along with opportunities to experience hands-on practice with diverse groups.
“What makes this multidisciplinary program particularly attractive is the integration with Nursing, and clinical courses offered on campus. This benefit also makes Trent’s Kinesiology program unique from similar degrees,” adds Professor West. “It is a well-rounded degree which will provide graduates with diverse and flexible career paths, including sport therapy, exercise and rehabilitation, and teaching.”
Trent’s B.Sc. in Kinesiology will also equip graduates with the expertise and skills required to become a registered professional with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.
Future students of this program will benefit from Trent’s partnerships with the local community, especially as the University moves ahead with plans to develop an elder care village. This future
on-campus development is envisioned to support a growing need for long-term care beds in Peterborough, while also providing an innovative environment for teaching, learning and research.
Applications for the Kinesiology B.Sc. at Trent are now being accepted for September 2020.
