Short film, Time Travel, to screen January 26 at Showplace

Dr. Nadine Changfoot smiles into the camera

ReFrame Film Festival will be screening associate professor of Political Studies, Dr. Nadine Changfoot’s film Time Travel on Saturday January 26 at 5:00 p.m. at Showplace.

“I’m absolutely thrilled for Time Travel to have been accepted by ReFrame,” says Professor Changfoot, a huge fan of ReFrame, and who has been attending the festival since its early years. “ReFrame is very close to my heart with its commitments to documentary film, community building, and social justice.”

“In this short film, I contemplate good-byes to my working dad when I was a young girl, and to my retired dad living with dementia when I was in my mid-thirties. The purpose of my making the film was to give life to and honour the memory of “good-byes” I shared with my dad,” Prof. Changfoot explains. “I hope the film will encourage each one of us, to see new possibilities in our relationships with persons living with dementia, and to welcome-in these possibilities. In many ways, I had a close relationship with my dad when he was living with dementia. In important ways, dementia brought us closer. When I accepted my dad as himself living with Alzheimer’s disease, I began to see more of himself and relate with him in new ways I had not done so prior. We shared music together. We danced and moved together. I shared more openly with him through the guidance of long term care staff. I gave him therapeutic touch therapy. Saying good-bye and letting go after such full visits was heartrending.”

Time Travel is Prof. Changfoot’s second film to be screened at ReFrame.

Prof. Changfoot is a researcher with the project Bodies in Translation: Activist Art, Technology, and Access to Life, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funded research partnership that supported the production of her film. She, Dr. Sally Chivers and Bodies in Translation will be holding digital multimedia documentary workshops at Trent where films will be made by diverse older adults of their lived experience.
